Requited Love

Believed to be the son of Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) and Ares (god of courage and war), Anteros is one of the seven winged gods of love known as the Erotes. He is the god of requited love and his name literally translates to “love returned” or “counterpart love”. He is also referred to as the god of selfless love. In this capacity, he is also considered to be the avenger of unrequited love and one who punishes those who scorn or refuse to return the love of another. He was usually shown to be armed with a golden club and a plume of lead arrows which he would use to avenge unreciprocated love.

Anteros (or anti-Eros) was originally considered to be the rival of his twin brother, Eros, but he was eventually shown to work in conjunction with him. Some say that he was originally a gift from his mother to his brother as a playmate, so that Eros would not be lonely, but there is also the tale of how Anteros was needed by his brother in order to grow. Legend states that Aphrodite consulted Themis (goddess of wisdom) when she became upset that Eros remained a child. Themis explained that the boy would only mature if he had a brother, as love must be returned if it is to grow and prosper. With the arrival of Anteros, Eros did grow, but whenever the boys were separated, Eros would return to his cherub-like form.

The boys are usually depicted in similar ways - both young and naked, with wings - however, Anteros was usually shown with longer hair and wings that resembled the shape of a butterfly’s rather than a traditional angelic figure. They are often represented in art sitting on either side of their mother, or gracing the balanced scales of love. They have also been portrayed as brothers wrestling to seize a palm tree from each other, which has been used to symbolise how rivalry can be overcome through love, kindness and gratitude.
