Persuasion + Seduction

In Greek, the name Peitho is translated to “persuasion”. Peitho was known as both persuasion personified and the goddess of persuasion, seduction and charming speech. Her ancestry is unclear and there are many conflicting stories relating to her parentage and age. Some believe that she was a daughter of the Titans, Tethys and Oceanus, while others have said she was a daughter of Prometheus (Titan god of fire). Many count her as a daughter of Aphrodite (goddess of love, beauty and sexuality) while others proclaim she was the child of Ate (goddess of mischief and delusion). She has also been listed as one of the Charities (Graces - goddesses of grace and charm) and therefore a daughter of Dionysus.

She was widely considered to be an attendant or hand-maiden to Aphrodite and a nurse to the baby Erotes (winged love gods). Peitho and Aphrodite were said to have been very close companions and Peitho was often depicted in the background of art and stories featuring Aphrodite and her son, Eros (god of carnal love). It was alleged that she was with them during the persuasion of Helen of Troy, leading into the Trojan War, as her skills were generally used to make the agreements required to unite couples.

Her powers were said to help young men when they were hoping to convince potential fathers-in-law of their suitability to marry their daughters. Over the years, young couples were encouraged to pray to the gods for a happy and prosperous life, with Peitho being one of those gods.

When Zeus commissioned the creation of the first woman, Pandora, it was Peitho and the Charities that were said to have adorned her with the tools of seduction, such as rings and necklaces.

While her powers of persuasion usually focussed on love, romance and sexuality, there were instances where she also helped on a much larger scale. Peitho’s powers were used to facilitate civic agreements and unities. She was praised for being the goddess who helped people to work together so that society could run efficiently. She was also considered essential to the smooth workings of law and democracy.

In art, Peitho was often depicted with her hand raised, as if in the act of persuasion. A sacred ball of binding twine is often used as her symbol to represent unity. She is also associated with the dove of peace, as part of her association with Aphrodite.
