Friendship + Affection
Friendship + Affection
Philotes was the daughter of the primordial deity, Nyx (night), so was herself considered to be a minor primordial deity. Some say that Erebus (darkness) was her father, while others believe that she had no father and was born only of Nyx. She was said to have represented both social and sexual intercourse. As a primordial being, she was the personification of friendship, affection and sex, although she was often referred to as the goddess of such.
Translated, the name Philotes is said to mean “tenderness”, “friendship”, “affection” and “amorousness”.
Philotes was said to have been a driving force behind the creation of humankind. She was often
paired with her opposites, the Neikea (spirits of feuds, quarrels and grievances). While the Neikea were the cause of bad circumstances, Philotes was considered to be the source of good.
The common use of blood sacrifices to appease the gods did not sit well with Philotes, as she thought that all life was equally sacred and should be honoured. She found the practice offensive and demanded that mortals abolish the custom, asking that all who worship her do so without causing harm to any living creatures.
